As a research fellow at the Life Sciences Institute at the University of Michigan, I used electron microscopes to study the structures of proteins. This work involved purifying proteins, preparing microscope samples, and collecting images of large numbers of single protein macromolecules. Once micrographs were in hand, I used advanced methods for processing, averaging, and aligning the images in order to implement techniques for the reconstruction of 3 dimensional models.
